Found in everything from plastics to fabrics, household goods, vaping compounds, medications, nutritional supplements, hair care and styling products, and certainly skincare and cosmetics, preservatives play an important role in preventing the growth of fungi and bacteria and keeping these items from decomposing or growing mould when contaminated by a microbe. Preservatives are common in many foods, too, where they prevent decay and kill microbes that could be health hazards.

Preservatives are also used to keep a product looking more like it did when it was first made. For example, they can help prevent cosmetics, throw pillows, and sporting gear from fading in color over time and especially if stored in a place that gets a lot of sunlight and heat.

So many preservatives, however, are top contact allergens, including parabens, MCI/MI, benzyl alcohol, phenoxyethanol, formaldehyde, etc.. Watch out for products that say “preservative-free” or “paraben-free” on the label: some of them use fragrances (most of which are also common contact allergens) to preserve the product.

Like other skincare and cosmetics, VMV Hypoallergenics products have to resist contamination and withstand harsh conditions in shipment and storage. Because so many preservatives are allergens, VMV instead makes use of monolaurin and virgin coconut oil’s well-proven antimicrobial capabilities in a proprietary self-preserving system. This self preservation keeps our products well protected from microbial contamination but, not having stronger chemical preservatives (and other masking ingredients like dyes and fragrances), our allergen-free products do tend to show more natural physical changes over time and more variances in general than highly preserved products.
