Ube (Purple Yam)

Originally from the Philippines where it is a staple in the local cuisine (especially in sweets), this Instagram-fave food is not a top contact allergen. As it’s basically a bright purple sweet potato, ube (pronounced “ooh-beh”) shares the sweet potato’s health benefits and is a great source of fiber, antioxidants, vitamins, and healthy carbs. Ube’s bright purple hue may actually be its superpower: it’s from high levels of anthocyanin, a potent antioxidant.

If you’ve prick tested to sweet potato as a food, unless you also patch test positive for it, the chances are high that your skin can come into contact with ube without a problem. This is because food and skin allergies involve such different cells and systems (click Skin & Food Allergies Are Not The Same Thing to learn more).

You can eat ube just boiled as itself or in desserts made with ube … but do check for other substances that you’ve patch tested positive for. Definitely be more wary of pre-packaged, long-shelf life purple foods and drinks that may have more dyes, preservatives, and flavor (which is related to fragrance) than actual ube in them.
